Vampires and stuff

            I’ve always known who Dracula was –the creepy vampire guy- but I never really knew his story and stuff. I always assumed that Dracula was going to be how everyone perceives Dracula. A man who can’t stop drinking the blood of humans and then the townspeople try to kill him. This is my first time reading Dracula. I always imagined it to seem more gruesome and suspenseful, but it’s more mysterious. I did enjoy some parts of it. I like how the book has diary entries, it makes it more entertaining and easier to read.

           

            The part where people are telling Harker not to go to Dracula’s castle and then he ends up feeling like his prisoner kind of reminds me of Beauty and the Beast in way. Belle gets a weird vibe from the beast’s creepy castle, but she goes in anyway and her father is a prisoner, but then she decides to be the beast’s prisoner instead to her father go. Another part that relates to Beauty and the Beast is when Dracula just says that Harker can just leave and he thinks he’s never going to get out of the castle. Belle was always in the room and the beast always got fed up that she would never leave the room he said if she just wants to leave she can. Those parts aren’t exactly the same, but it’s a similar situation. They’re honestly both so stubborn.

                                 This is basically Harker except he really isn’t locked up in a cell.

            In many other TV shows, movies, etc. they make Dracula seem like a good guy at the end, but in the beginning they make him seem like an awful person. He’s like everyone else except he needs blood to survive, which is bad, but people over-exaggerate his character a lot. Honestly, if I ever met Dracula I’d obviously be afraid, but I know that he could potentially end up controlling it. I also believe people imagine him as wearing all black, hair slicked back, fangs, long nails, cape etc. (typical vampire look). In the book I think he just looks like a regular person to everyone else. Until people find out what he’s really like and what he does. Overall, I did enjoy some parts of the book, but I think it would be better as a movie or a TV show that’s just about Dracula because some movies don’t really focus on just Dracula throughout the entire thing.

          This is my first experience with Pride and Prejudice and I actually enjoy it. I didn’t think I would because of the time period. I usually assume that if something is not as modern, it will be extremely boring, but that was not the case with Pride and Prejudice. I would have to say that my least favorite characters would be, Mr. Darcy and Mr. Collins. Darcy thinks he’s better than everyone else and he is rude. Collins thinks he has the right to move on the next woman available, since Elizabeth rejected his proposal. I thought that was such a cliché move. “It didn’t work with her so how about I move on to her dearest friend, Charlotte.” That’s basically what Mr. Collins had said in his head.

            I have started watching the “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and I find the episodes very entertaining. I also enjoy that most of the episodes are spot on with the passages in the book. I would have to say I do enjoy the diaries more than the actual book only because it is in modern day. The humor and sarcasm is still presentable in the diaries, which is what makes it entertaining. In the diaries there are only three sisters rather than five. I believe it is better to have three sisters instead of five because it makes it much easier to keep up with. There are so many unnecessary characters.

            I didn’t find it very shocking when Mr. Darcy exposed his love towards Lizzy. I honestly expected it because of the way he acted towards her. He was really rude towards her, but I’m not sure why, maybe that’s why he shows that he likes her. In the diaries Lizzie was shocked when Darcy told her he loved her. I’m glad Mr. Darcy and Lizzy don’t end up together. I would much rather see her with Mr. Wickham. He is the only sympathetic man in the story and he genuinely likes Lizzy.

            Overall I enjoy the book and the diaries. I can’t wait to see who Lizzy ends up or if she even gets married at all. I believe her sisters will get married first and she will be the last. I also believe that she will end up with Mr. Darcy rather than Mr. Wickham. Although, I would like her to end up with Mr. Wickham. The good girl always ends up choosing the bad guy. Why does this happen? I’ve seen many situations like this and they never end well.

Sherlock is actually pretty cool.

            I’ve come to terms with myself, and I actually enjoy Sherlock Holmes more than I expected. Throughout the first couple paragraphs I couldn’t get into it, but as the crimes came along it got interesting for me. The stories are fairly understandable and captivating. I was never introduced to Holmes in high school and I’m not sure why. I think teachers should teach about him in school, so that way students have some background knowledge and understanding of who he is, but I’m pretty sure most people know that he’s a detective.

            I know a lot of people that find Sherlock Holmes kind of quirky, which is true, but I feel that his characteristics is what makes it interesting. Watson of course is included in that as well. I’ve always been interested in crime shows and the suspense part of movies. I’m pretty sure that’s why I enjoy Holmes so much. Not only is it interesting, but it makes me sit at the edge of my seat because I want to know what is going to happen next. In The Dancing Men I wanted to know what the words spelled out. It was cool to see the techniques/knowledge he used to unscramble the words and what it meant.

            The board game Clue reminds of Sherlock Holmes a lot. I’ve also never seen any of the movies or shows either. I was pretty excited when I saw that we get to watch an episode of Sherlock. I think the show will be even more interesting than the readings because you actually get to see how he is solving the crimes rather than reading about them. Watching something is so much more amusing than reading about it because then you can see facial expressions and identify the characters easily. At times I would catch myself not knowing the clues they were giving out, but that’s why I would think it would be easier to interpret the clues if you’re watching it because of the tone in their voices and their body language. I have always imagined Sherlock like this when I was reading the stories. He seems like the type of detective to smoke out of a pipe. 

            Overall, I enjoy Sherlock Holmes and hope to keep liking the stories and eventually like the shows and movies. I’m also hoping to be so interested in the show that I can just watch it on my own without having to be assigned to do so. Many people say they enjoy the Sherlock episodes.
